Understanding Why Tymal Mills Deserves £1.4m at IPL Auction

Tymal Mills made headlines when he became the second most expensive player at this year’s IPL auction. Currently playing for the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League being held in Dubai, Mills is a rare breed of cricketer who can take the positives out of bleak situations.

Just 2 years previously, a diagnosis revealed that the cricketer had a congenital back condition. His vertebrae and spinal cord are too close. This increases the risks of spinal aggravation. The experts determined that fast bowling over long periods was too risky for the player.IPL Live Streaming 2017

This was a problem for Mills who had already demonstrated his ability to reach speeds of 90mph with both reds and whites. From the technical viewpoint, his deadly pace made him suitable for all cricketing formats. However, the diagnosis meant that he could only play T20 as he would never be bowling over 24 balls in the evenings.

That proved to be a silver lining for the player who created a bidding war for him at the IPL auction. Ultimately, he was bought for £1.4m by Royal Challengers Bangalore. The final price is a shocking 24 times the base price he entered the auction in.

This is more shocking when considering the fact that he has been capped only four times by England in T20 matches. In them, he took 3 wickets, one catch and no runs.ICC Champions Trophy Tickets 2017

The fact is that his back injury forced him to focus solely on T20 speeding up his development in the format faster. Additionally, he is a left-handed pace bowler, a delivery angle that is heavily demanded in this format due to its effectiveness.

As such, the future does seem bright for Mills.
