Jason Roy Believes IPL Will Help England in Pursuing Champions Trophy Success
Jason Roy was recently selected by Gujarat Lions at the IPL auction in a deal worth £120,000. He will be joined by five other English players, chosen for the tenth edition of IPL, in the upcoming England’s tour of the Caribbean.
The Surrey opener believes the IPL participation will provide England the edge when they participate in the Champions Trophy. For Roy, this is his first time in the IPL. He mentions that it is not all about the money. It is about becoming accustomed to playing in front of large crowds. As an overseas player, there is a pressure to perform well. Roy believes that these are all the foundation elements that are necessary for succeeding at a big tournament.
Jason Roy recently managed to hit 79 in the opening warm-up match against Vice-Chancellor’s XI. England won that match. Roy expects to continue the opening partnership he shares with Alex Hales before the start of the Champions Trophy in June 2017. Currently, he is a part of the squad which is heading to the West Indies for the 3-match ODI series.
On the other hand, Hales is still recovering after breaking his right hand. He will be returning to the England squad this week in time for the Caribbean tour.
Roy is going to be playing for England in the final match of the tour. They go up against President’s XI. Roy believes that Alex may join the team immediately. He is of the opinion that Hales deserves the opening spot.
